Use your existing background
Your previous field is not automatically wasted. Domain knowledge from civil engineering, electronics, finance, design, healthcare, or operations can help you notice useful software problems. The goal is not to hide your background; it is to add credible software capability to it.
Learn the minimum durable foundation
Begin with one programming language, basic data structures, Git, command-line familiarity, debugging, HTTP, APIs, databases, and testing. Learn enough browser fundamentals for web work and enough operating-system concepts to understand where programs run.
Avoid spending months comparing roadmaps. Select a coherent stack and stay with it through at least two finished projects.
Build in increasing levels of responsibility
Your first project can be small but should be yours. The second should include persistence, validation, errors, tests, and deployment. The third should solve a real problem for a specific group, even if it remains a practice project.
Add complexity because the problem demands it—not to list more technologies. A dependable small product is stronger evidence than an unstable system assembled from fashionable tools.
Close theory gaps deliberately
As your projects grow, study the concepts they expose: complexity, data modelling, concurrency, networking, security, architecture, and performance. You do not need to reproduce an entire degree before applying, but you should recognise the fundamentals relevant to your target role.
Apply with a coherent story
Explain why you moved toward software, what you have built, which parts you owned, and what your earlier discipline contributes. Target entry-level and adjacent roles honestly. Continue improving based on where applications fail: resume screen, assessment, technical interview, or communication round.
